What system do I need to keep my lights on during load shedding?
Decide what appliances you would like to power
________________________________________
The wattage given below are estimates on essential appliances
________________________________________
Choose an inverter that can handle the combined wattage of your devices
________________________________________
Some appliances draw double (2x) it's power during start-up (surge power)
Example 1
Start-up power surge: 575w
Continuous power: 280w
a 500w inverter is NOT suitable
Example 2
Start-up power surge: 575w
Continuous power: 280w
a 1000w inverter IS suitable
An inverter needs a safety margin of about 10-20% when it’s operating. Never load the inverter @ 100% (full) capacity.

How long will I have power for during load shedding?
________________________________________
It depends primarily on how powerful the appliances(s) you're running & if the battery is fully charged.
Lead-Acid, GEL and AGM batteries should never be fully discharged and can only be discharged up to 50% before irreversible damage occurs. This means that you will only be able to use half of your battery capacity.
HOW TO CALCULATE THE HOURS
EXAMPLE
50% x 12V = 600
150W (TV) + 50W (DSTV) + 7W (LED LIGHT) = 207
600 + 207 = 2.89 hours
Lithium batteries can be fully discharged which means you have the full capacity (100%) available to use.
